The ambition of the COREALIS Incubator scheme was to foster the development of port-city innovation clusters by organizing a Hackathon in the Port of Valencia. The Valenciaport Hackathon was an exciting opportunity to promote innovation in the port community. As the leader in Mediterranean Sea in container transport, the port must remain agile, self-sufficient and sustainable.

The Valenciaport Hackathon combined academic knowledge and talent from entrepreneurs/start-ups with the port-logistics community to enable sustainable development of intelligent ports. This digital event was an extraordinary opportunity for the innovation ecosystem and  inspired the port-logistics industry to convert their ideas to concrete solutions.

The Valenciaport Hackathon was conducted virtually on November 20 – November 27, while the registration opened on October 26th.

During one week the participants were able to develop innovative solutions in response to the four challenges posed, with the advice and support of expert mentors in ports and foreign trade from the sponsoring entities and Fundación Valenciaport. They were also assisted by the organisation in forming teams, for those who register individually.

The eight most promising solutions went on to the grand final, where a jury made up of the organisers and sponsors of the Valenciaport Hackathon and selected the three winning proposals.

Four (4) Challenges

· Circular Economy In Ports (sponsored by the Port Authority of Valencia): Port-City collaboration scheme for circular waste management: Use of urban and port waste to have a km 0 valorisation that returns to the city and the port. This challenge seeks energy models based on waste, use of technological platforms for sharing information on waste, waste traceability, etc.

· Optimization of Road Transport Operations (sponsored by Cosco Shipping Lines): Synchronization and optimization of road transport operations through greater use of available assets, visibility of operations and a reduction of inefficiencies. This challenge seeks solutions that provide greater transparency and visibility that result in an optimized planning of port operations.

· Transform Ocean Rates Processing (sponsored by Grupo Romeu): Transported containers require negotiation, in which expenses are invoiced via sophisticated quote management systems, each distinctly unique per shipping company. This challenge seeks technological solutions that create value by helping process the current massive amount of rate sheets and different formats into one single standard output for logistics operators and quotation management systems.

· International Trade Facilitation for Port Operations (sponsored by the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation): Trade facilitation can create new business opportunities, enable greater economic and social development and can lead to a reduction in poverty. This challenge seeks trade facilitation solutions that reduce costs and spark productivity, innovation and growth by addressing delays and unnecessary waiting times at borders.
